Mission Statement

The Prospect Heights Shul is a warm and diverse Modern Orthodox community that exists to create meaningful relationships among its members and with G-d; to foster personal and spiritual growth; and to care for those who are marginalized, within our community and beyond it. We comprise a variety of demographics, backgrounds, and religious viewpoints. We are all working to build a rich and vibrant community, and we’d love to have you be a part of it!

Clergy
Rabbi Jon Leener

Rabbi

Rabbi Jonathan Leener is a Brooklyn based rabbi, who currently serves as the spiritual leader of the Prospect Heights Shul. Jon was ordained at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School in 2016. He has served as the rabbinic intern at Sherith Israel Congregation in Nashville, Tennessee and Beth Sholom Congregation in Potomac, Maryland. His writings on Judaism have appeared in The Washington Post, The Jewish Week, The Jerusalem Post, and Haaretz. Rabbi Leener also serves as the spiritual leader of Base BKLYN and a member of the New York Board of Rabbis. 

 

Before entering rabbinical school, Jon studied at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. He received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin where he studied Film and Jewish Studies. Jon grew up in Chevy Chase, MD and is a loyal D.C. sports fan. Rabbi Leener now lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn with his wife Faith and their two children, Yehuda and Hannah.

Abby Deift

Secretary & VP Communications

Abby is a Brooklyn transplant by way of Manhattan, DC, and Boston. When she's not at work in the financial sector, Abby can be found exploring coffee shops in Brooklyn. She is responsible for the announcements committee, the website, and outreach/marketing. Abby can be contacted at

Michael Chasan

VP Operations

Michael Chasan is a corporate attorney at Google. He is a graduate of Fordham Law School and holds masters and bachelors degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the proud husband of Rebecca Chasan and proud father of their two girls - Ella and Avery, living in Brooklyn since 2014. Michael oversees all operational elements of PHS.

Daniel Machlis

Treasurer

Daniel is a technology leader and operator with a focus in the world of finance. He currently works as a Product Manager at Publicis Sapient. Daniel handles all finanical issues for the shul; he lives in Crown Heights and can be contacted at treasurer@prospectheightsshul.org

Noah Greenfield

General Board Member

Noah is a consultant at McKinsey &Co. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, a doctoral candidate in Near Eastern Studies at UC Berkeley, and received his ordination from Yeshiva University. He is the proud husband of Dr. Nava Greenfield and proud father of their three boys; Judah, Gabriel and Theo (Yedidya). Noah has lived in Brooklyn since 2014. Shushana Young (Jachobov)

General Board Member

Shushana is an entertainment strategist and lawyer.  Shushana brings previous board experience, having served as a board member for 1B entertainment portfolio, as well as having been special advisor to the board of the Western Marble Arch Synagogue in London, UK.  Shushana can be contacted at board@prospectheightsshul.org

Belle Guttman

General Board Member

Belle grew up in Brooklyn and has lived in Prospect Heights with her daughter Aviva for the past nine years. She has served on past PHS boards, has served on the Luria Academy board for three years, and is the chair of the PHS Ritual Committee. Belle leads a team of cloud architects at Amazon Web Services, and when not working can be found enjoying good food and drinks with friends or cycling around town. Belle can be contacted at board@prospectheightsshul.org 

Jackson Krule

General Board Member

Jackson is a born and raised New York photographer with a BFA in Photography from The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. His work has been selected for American Photography 34 and is a recipient of the Magenta Flash Forward Award. Previously, he worked as a photo editor at The New Yorker. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and their dog. Jackson can be contacted at board@prospectheightsshul.org
