PHS Members Eric Moed and Caila Laurel Moed are on their honeymoon in Greece, where they are working to help Syrian refugees. Here is a message about a unique charity opportunity from them.

PHS is proud of its members, like Eric and Caila, who dedicate so much time and effort to make the world a better place!

“Hello from our honeymoon!

Right now we are on an overnight ferry to Samos, Greece - an island that's only 1 mile from Turkey. Samos has received over 90,000 refugees - 3x its native population. Many are fleeing Syria, Sudan and other war-torn countries; they arrive here - their first stop in Europe, seeking asylum. We are sure you are familiar with the current refugee crisis, but we wanted to share some things that you may not have heard about through the news, and to offer an opportunity to help refugees here on the ground in Greece.

Aiding refugees here in Greece is very complicated, but in sum, we have learned the best way to cut through this red tape is hand to hand, human to human. Which is why we're here now.

We have obtained a list of equipment, supplies and clothing that are immediately needed. Things that transcend cultures - like educational materials, sports equipment, diapers and underwear.

This Sunday, after Shabbat, we are going on a supply run with an organization called Samos Volunteers.

It took months to coordinate a volunteering opportunity that would make a direct impact. Most aid organizations have strict preferences for the time and profession/skill set of the volunteers they require and even then volunteers are not guaranteed impactful work. Finally through a conversation with a friend, who happens to have a Greek wife, who is friends with a cafe-owner in Samos, who works with a volunteer coordinator, we found something legitimate. That volunteer coordinator is our new friend Bogdan. Bogdan runs Samos Volunteers, an organization dedicated to clothing, educating and counseling recent refugee arrivals. It is a direct-aid, local effort.

If you'd like to support their work follow the link below for instructions on how you can directly help - without all the red tape and confusing news articles.

If it is preferable, feel free to Venmo us directly. We will be using funds to purchase items that are immediately needed on the ground.

We are sharing our journey and learnings to open a door for our friends and family should this cause also be on your minds and in your hearts.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions. Let's work together to support those caught in the biggest refugee crisis since WWII.

We miss you all and can’t wait to see you soon.

Caila and Eric”
